Happy Halloween and ghostly greetings! As October wraps up, we continue to work diligently to improve our services, network with the community, further our education, and strive to provide an unBOOlieveable experience for our clients.

Ohio Small Business Deduction Update

The Ohio Senate has Voted

According to the Ohio State Bar Association, the Ohio Senate voted in favor to repeal the attorney exemption to the Ohio Small Business Deduction.  As of this vote, there is bipartisan agreement in both chambers that attorneys and lobbyists should be able to continue to claim the deduction on their state income taxes just as other service professionals are able.

Now that the bill has passed in the House and Senate, it will pass to the Governor for review and signature.

Community Outreach

NorthAvenue Gives Back

It is important to us to be an active member of our community and give back to the place where we put down roots.

This past year we reached out to the Clintonville Beechwold Community Resources Center (CRC), a local non-profit organization whose mission is to deliver responsive services, cultivate partnerships, and promote opportunities to foster a healthier community, regarding volunteering opportunities —and they are always looking for help!

We decided to roll up our sleeves and help out at their local food pantry as a team. We helped by loading/unloading trucks with donated food, organizing the clothing and food in their store front, and reloading food bins.

We had the opportunity to meet the many wonderful people who volunteer regularly and meet the people in the community who benefit from the CRC.

Financial Planning Day

This year, Financial Planning Day 2019 was quite the success! Many CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals, including our very own Chandler Fugate-Laus, volunteered their time and expertise to make sure our community could have access to financial help and education.

Financial Planning Day is an annual event hosted by the Financial Planning Association, provides the community an opportunity to receive free, one-on-one personalized financial advice from CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals. These professionals discuss a variety of financial topics, including debt management, investment strategies, retirement planning, tax issues, insurance reviews, estate planning, etc.

Networking & Continuing Education

NAPFA Fall 2019 National Conference

The fall and spring national conferences are the largest conferences held by the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA). On average, about 75 exhibitors and 500 practitioners are in attendance. All participants are able to take part in educational sessions that feature the many areas of financial planning, presentations on the latest industry trends, issues, and technology, an exhibit hall with products and services, and a variety of social functions for networking. This year’s conference was held in Chicago, and Kristen and Chandler attended. In addition to the activities described, they had the opportunity to listen to some of the many guest speakers which included Weston Wellington, the Vice President of Dimensional Fund Advisors.

Kristen, now a member of the NAPFA National Board, was able to experience the event with a different perspective and think more about what we can do to not only better our client experience but also better the industry as a whole.

They also had the chance to visit the Robey Hotel in Chicago, on North Avenue, the namesake of our company.

FPA Symposium

Last month, Chandler, T.J, and Martina attended the annual Financial Planning Association Central Ohio Chapter Mini-Symposium.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Derek T. Tharp, a researcher at Kitces.com who gave two presentations, the first on retirement savings strategies and the second on retirement withdrawal strategies.

Chandler, T.J. and Martina also heard presentations regarding social security claiming strategies and Medicare fundamentals. In between sessions, they had the chance to interact and trade ideas and planning strategies with their fellow planners in the central Ohio area.

GAP Group Fall Meeting

Kristen recently went to Champaign, Ill., to meet with the GAP (Gen Y Advisor Peer) Group.

The GAP Group is comprised of successful advisor/owners of fee-only financial planning companies in six major cities across the Midwest. To maintain membership in the GAP Group, two rules must be followed:

  1. Attend every in-person meeting, twice a year.

  2. Share everything about how their business is run in order to better the client experiences of the advisors in the group.

During this GAP Group meeting, the group discussed current processes, strategies, financial planning practices, and new technology. With all of their shared experiences, Kristen brought back many new ideas and shared them with the team. We look forward to the many fang-tastic changes to come!

After their meeting, in proper Champaign fashion, the group tailgated at the University of Illinois football game and enjoyed a few of the local restaurants.
